Fitting Into Your New Space

One of the most overwhelming thoughts of the entire downsizing process and one that may have led you here, is:

"What do I do with all my stuff?!"

If you are downsizing, you are simply not going to have enough room to take everything with you. You must decide what stays and what goes. The last thing you want to do is pay for storage - that in itself is a false economy.

Firstly, I am going to ask you to work through an exercise which will help you understand exactly how much stuff will fit into your new space. We will work through which items can come with you and which items will have to go. You may have to make some tough decisions.

Are you ready to visualise?

Workbook Exercise: Your Floor Plan

Here is the first exercise.

Step 1: Imagine your new home.

You don't have to know where your new home is or when you are moving - just imagine what the floor plan might look like.

You can establish this by working out which rooms you no longer need, then create your new floor plan (similar to the one you find pictured). If you already have an idea of where you are going or found your new place of residence, you can draw that. If not, you can just visualise this as a 'desired option' at this stage.

How many rooms will you need, would you like an outdoor entertaining area? etc.

e.g: Would you like a 2 bedroom, or 3 bedroom home? 2 bathrooms? a balcony?

Step 2: Draw your new abode.

Now it is time to draw your new floorplan, just as you have imagined it. Make sure you include everything in your wish list that you created in the Rightsize Your Home Training Course Part 1: Shifting Your Mindset.

Once you have drawn a layout in your mind or on paper, you can complete your property walk through to help generate the declutter actions items you need to address.

Will your 12-seater dining table fit in your new place?

Even though this item may have once been very valuable to you, it may not hold the same 'value' now. We will discuss the real meaning of value again in this course.
